What is a niche and how to find yours?

Unless you have been living under a rock, you would have heard everyone going on about having to find your niche, and you need to niche down.

You might be wanting to start a new business, but even after listing all your passions and the things you are good at, you are still not any closer to finding your ideal niche. I have seen so many people stress out over finding their niche, and to be honest, I did not have mine 100% when I started!

If you are like me, this stress can undoubtedly hold you back from starting in the first place because you think it needs to be perfect. Therefore, I have put together some steps that you can follow to help you put together your niche by the end of today, and you will stand out from the crowd.

By the end of this, you will be CRYSTAL clear on what your niche is.

Remember, Marketing is not a niche; it is an industry; instead, say you offer social media management.

Firstly (and this you should know), make a list of all your ideas and passions. What makes you tick? What are you an expert in, purely because you enjoy it so much? The idea is to write down whatever comes to mind, no matter how silly it might sound. Don't move on to step two until you list your passions and interests and look at what overlaps.

The second step would be to identify problems within these niches - this would be your baseline for a profitable business. Finally, you need to understand your audience's pain points to get an idea of what problems they need answers to. You can do this by browsing online communities, talking to people, and looking at your competitors.

Your niches' list should hopefully be a bit shorter when you go to the next step. This is where you get to play Nancy Drew, see what these niche competitors are up to, and analyze. You want to make sure that there is a healthy number of competitors, which will help validate your idea. Understanding what your potential competitors are doing and what you could do differently is vital for creating a well-informed plan for your niche.

The next step is that so many forget when they find their niche and do keyword research. You want to know which keywords your potential clients are searching for. You want to find words with a high search number, and there are so many tools that can help you with this, like Google Trends, Google Adwords: Keyword Planner, Ubersuggest, SEMrush, etc.

By now, your niche is coming together but is it profitable? There are a few ways you can find out if your niche is profitable:

➡️ Check out your competitors

➡️ Identify best-selling items on competitor sites

➡️ Look at relevant groups on Facebook and see if people are looking for the services you offer

Before constructing your niche, you need to know your audience, as this will affect your tone of voice, marketing tactic, platforms used, the content you create, design choices, and the images you use.

You want to make sure that your niche is evergreen; as tempting as it is to jump onto a new hot and trending niche, I don't think fidget-spinners are making lots of money nowadays? So instead of making a quick buck, it's a good idea to check that your niche has staying power so that it'll keep making you money consistently for a long time.

Next, you need to find your unique selling point, why people will buy from you rather than your competitor. Don't panic if you can't think of a unique selling point straight away. Instead, ask yourself: what value can I add to this niche? This is where you get to draw on your passion, talent, or expertise and combine it with all the competitor analysis you carried out earlier. If your competitors are dropping the ball in a particular area – such as product presentation, lack of personal touch, or retro designs – then you can step up and stand out with a new version or alternative.

Now it is time to put it together; fill in the blanks:

I help _______________ with _______________get ____________with____________

Example: I help small business owners turn followers into clients by developing a recognizable brand and a content strategy that encourages organic growth.
